Staining Ideas For Bedroom Furniture

Choose wood stain colors that work with your decor.

Wood is one of the most versatile design materials, especially when it comes to adding color to the wood. If you have a piece of wooden bedroom furniture--such as a bed or dresser--that needs a little sprucing up, consider refinishing it. There are several options for staining bedroom furniture.

Dark

Dark wood stain colors, such as espresso and ebony, work well in modern, contemporary or ultra-modern design schemes. The dark wood tones will help add depth and richness to a room that would otherwise feel stark and uninviting. Choose these stain colors for wood furniture with clean lines, like platform beds and simple bedside tables, as these styles complement a modern design approach.

If you choose a dark wood stain for bedroom furniture, consider choosing lighter or brighter colors for the walls, ceiling and trim in the room. Whites, soft grays and blues will all complement the dark wood color and brighten up the room. Use bright primary colors to add color to the room.

Medium

Medium wood tones, like cherry and mahogany, are ideal choices for a traditional bedroom. Though these are both rich colors, they will provide a neutral backdrop for the elegant accouterments needed in a traditional bedroom. Add these stain colors to four-poster or sleigh bed styles and elegant bedside tables that fit the traditional design plan.

Softer, elegant colors work best with medium wood tones. Choose neutral colors, such as beige and cream, or soft colors, like buttery yellows, light blues or sage greens for walls, ceilings and trim. Avoid using dark grays, black, or white, as these colors will appear too stark next to the depth of the stain color.

Light

Lighter stain colors are often used in country design. Pine, white oak and maple stains are all good choices for a light wood stain color. For country decor, choose wood furniture with a classic design, such as a panel bed or an antique wardrobe, and stain them in one of the light wood tones. Choose colors that complement the wood tone for wall color, such as yellow, pink, blue or green. When choosing paint colors, however, be sure to check a paint swatch against the stained wood, as some paint colors will clash with the stain.

Light wood stains also work well in a modern bedroom, especially if you have chosen a darker color, such as plum or dark gray for the walls. The light wood tones will lighten the feel of the room, providing an airy touch to a room that could feel heavy and dark.

Colors

Many wood stain manufacturers make wood stains in colors as well as natural wood shades. From light pink to midnight blue, there is a rainbow of colors from which to choose. Colorful wood stains work well in a country decor or a child's room. Consider choosing a wood stain in a color that is brighter or deeper than the dominant color of the room's decor to create a standout piece of furniture.
