Lay Out A Small Bathroom

Small bathroom with efficient layout

If your bathroom is small, it is important to lay out the space in order to maximize every spare inch available. Draw up an accurate plan, choose smaller versions of standard fixtures and employ a few tricks to make a small space feel much larger than it actually is. A bathroom that is carefully laid out will make your daily routine go much smoother, and also add value to your home.

Instructions

1. Measure the space available. Draft a floorplan on graph paper, or use a computer-drafting program for even more precision. Every inch counts in a small bathroom, so you must accurately document the existing space.

2. Determine the sizes of the plumbing fixtures you plan to purchase. Check with manufacturers for exact sizes of sinks, toilets and showers. There are smaller-than-standard sizes available for many fixtures. Plan to use space-saving fixtures such as a pedestal sink, wall-mount toilet and walk in shower.

3. Note the locations of pipes within the bathroom walls. Call a plumber if you are unsure. Your new bathroom layout should work well with the existing pipe locations so you don't have to pay to have them extended or moved.

4. Create a basic layout within your graph paper sketch or plan that you drafted on the computer. Accurately draw the plumbing fixtures to scale, and adjust their locations until you come up with the most space-efficient design.
