Fix A Dripping Moen Bathroom Faucet

How do I Fix a Dripping Moen Bathroom Faucet?

A dripping faucet isn't just annoying, it can also be costly. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, leaks and drips in a typical household could add up to 10,000 gallons over a year. Luckily, fixing a dripping Moen bathroom faucet isn't difficult. Moen uses a specially manufactured cartridge instead of a valve stem, which makes replacement easy. No special tools are required, and the process can easily be done in an afternoon.

Instructions

1. Shut off the water for the Moen faucet. The water supply shutoff valves are underneath the faucet in most cases. Rotate the round or oval knob at the end of the faucet clockwise until it stops. Open the faucet to allow any water inside to run out.

2. Remove the faucet screw handle cap. These are usually disguised as the "Hot" or "Cold" labels on top of the faucet. Pry this off with the edge of a flat-bladed screwdriver or sharp knife. Unscrew the faucet handle screw with a Phillips screwdriver. Lift the faucet straight off the stem.

3. Remove the brass retainer cap with the pliers. These simply pull off.

4. Pull up the old stem. These are wedged in tightly on Moen faucets and a little difficult to remove. Pry up the stem with your screwdriver as much as you can and then pull it out with the pliers.

5. Insert the new stem into the faucet. There is a notch on the stem that allows it to be inserted in only one way. Rotate the stem in the faucet socket until you feel it click into the notch.

6. Replace the retaining cap.

7. Slip the faucet over the end of the stem. Insert the screw and tighten. Press the cap back into place.

8. Restore the water supply. Run the Moen bathroom faucet and check for proper operation.
