Dark brown furniture is cozy and inviting.
While many believe brown furniture to be old-fashioned, the color may easily be "played up" with various decorating techniques and colors. Transforming a bland bedroom interior into an natural, elegant rest area with brown furniture is quite simple, as brown fits with a wide array of color hues, both warm and cool.
Instructions
1. Decide how the furniture will be arranged. Start with a focal point, such as the bed, a vanity, or a large window, for example. The focal point is very important because this is the piece that will "create" the room.
2. Choose your decor style. Many assume brown to be a color of antiquity. However, brown furniture may also be used in a contemporary or modern setting, depending on how you decorate. For example, wood paneling is classic and will not fit in to funky, modern style bedrooms. Alternatively, you could opt for floor-to-ceiling drapes in a rich accent color behind your headboard.
3. Enliven the room. Bright green fresh or artificial plants breath a fresh air of life into a room without adding clutter or creating an eyesore. Place two plants on opposite sides of your bed, or set one atop your dresser. Alternatively, if space is an issue, a small potted fern in the corner of the room will take up less space while also achieving the desired look.
4. Choose your secondary colors. Warm colors such as deep reds, light oranges, and even gold are inviting and work well with brown furniture. Cool colors such as soft greens and mellow blues create a tranquil atmosphere. Blue and chocolate brown go especially well together and woody browns and soft greens blend nicely. Because your room is a place of rest, stray away from energetic colors such as bold yellows or electric blues.
5. Remember your accents. Brown furniture adds weight to a room and may make it feel small and cluttered. Neutral accents such as white, beige or taupe transform the beauty of the room and open it up for a more spacious feel. A neutral comforter may be all you need to really "lift" the area and make it feel less cluttered.
6. Let the sun shine. Natural light brightens a bedroom which, in turn, makes it feel wide and open. If you have a window balcony, decorate the area with ambient decor such as a fountain or dimming lights.
