Light fixtures should not touch items on the table, such as candles.
Lighting is important in interior design, but many people are stumped when it comes to hanging light fixtures, especially those that hang over a dining room table. Common sense and a few guidelines help determine the proper height.
Standard Height for a Light Fixture
For many fixtures, "around 30 inches from the top of the table" to the bottom of the light fixture is the standard height, according to interior design instructor Danielle Galland of Parsons the New School for Design.
Variations in Hanging Height
Not all fixtures will work well at 30 inches, so it is not uncommon to see fixtures hung at different heights in different homes. Some light fixtures may require a height of 42 inches, while other fixtures may look best with only 28 inches between the bottom of the fixture and the dining table.
Determining the Appropriate Height
Proper height can depend on the fixture, the size of the room and the size of the table. For the best results, leave plenty of space between the light fixture's bottom and any decorative centerpieces that may be commonly used on the dining table.
