Painting Antique Dining Furniture

Give your dining room furniture new life with paint.

Painting dining room furniture updates it and gives it a fresh, new look. Try black paint to give vintage or retro furniture a modern look, or lighten up dark wood with white paint. For a further redecoration, staple new fabric to upholstered dining room chairs. Allowing the paint and clear varnish to cure for five days keeps the finish from chipping or otherwise being damaged.

Instructions

1. Remove the seat bottoms from the dining room chairs by turning them over and using a screwdriver to remove the screws. Set the seat bottoms aside.

2. Sand the furniture with 100-grit sandpaper. This is especially important for furniture with a glossy finish, such as paint or varnish. Unfinished wood doesn't require sanding. Use a damp sponge to clean the furniture and remove any sanding dust.

3. Apply a coat of oil-based primer with a paintbrush. It's OK if this coat doesn't go on perfectly even. Allow it to dry completely.

4. Apply a coat of semi-gloss latex paint over the primer, using a clean paintbrush. Allow the paint to dry completely, then apply a second coat. The paint coats should go on thin and evenly. Allow the second coat to dry completely.

5. Apply two coats of clear varnish with a clean paintbrush after the paint is completely dry. Allow the varnish to dry between coats. Let the varnish dry and cure for five days before using the table and chairs.

6. Replace the seat bottoms by setting them in place and replacing the screws.
