Kids spend a lot of time playing on the floor, so take some time to consider the flooring options before remodeling. Flooring is a big investment-you'll want to choose a flooring option that is durable and won't go out of style quickly. Your child might love dark green carpeting now, but in a few years he may prefer something different. Stick with neutral floor options that go well with a number of decorating styles.
Carpet Squares
Carpet squares have advanced significantly in recent years. Carpet squares are easy to install and easy to replace. If your child spills grape juice on a carpet square, simply remove it and put down a new carpet square. You'll find a variety of colors and styles in carpet squares. Some companies, such as FLOR, have designer carpet squares with patterns that include tiger stripes, zebra stripes, suns and floral patterns. You can mix and match colors or patterns to create a one-of-a-kind bedroom floor.
Painted Wood
Hardwood floors that aren't in the best shape can get a makeover with a coat of paint. Sanding the floor first, followed by a coat of primer, allows the paint to stick. Decide if you want to paint the floor one solid color or paint a pattern onto the floor. Once the paint has dried for a few days, you'll want to add three to four coats of a water-based polyurethane. This protects the paint so it doesn't get scratched or wear out.
Foam Squares
Interlocking foam squares make a soft play spot in a child's bedroom. These foam squares work well on a hard surface such as wood floors. Foam squares typically come in primary colors decorated with the letters of the alphabet. If you want more of the floor covered, purchase several sets of the foam squares. Most have a removable border so you can connect two or more different sets to cover a larger area of the floor. The foam squares make a child-friendly alternative to traditional area rugs.
