Paint A Bedroom Beach Mural

If you are drawn in by the soothing sounds of the ocean and the smell of salt in the air, why not bring home a piece of the beach by painting your bedroom to look like your favorite tropical retreat? Invoking the feel of the seashore is an easy project that can be completed in a single afternoon, and the process will give your bedroom a relaxing feel that can serve as an escape after a busy day.

Instructions

1. Move all of the furniture out of the room or to the the center of the room to give you space to maneuver in the room. Tape off any trim, window sills or door frames that you do not want to be painted. Lay down heavy canvas or plastic tarps to protect the floors, and cover remaining furniture to protect it also.

2. Remove switch plates from light switches and electrical outlets, storing the screws and plates in a safe place. Cover the switches and sockets with tape to keep them from being splattered with paint.

3. Choose a like to become the horizon point on the shore, and run a strip of tape around the room at that level. Use the level to keep the line even all the way around the room.

4. Paint sky blue above the horizon line, and the blue or green color you chose for the ocean below it. Leave approximately three feet of wall space unpainted at the bottom of the walls. Remove the tape from the horizon line and use a paintbrush to fill in the white strip with sky blue. Blend the line slightly by dabbing it with the sponge.

5. Use a special sand effects paint to fill in the beach area. Sand paint has actual sand mixed in with the color, so it will give the wall an interesting, sandy texture when it is painted. Make sure to mix the paint well, and paint the lower wall section with a roller in one small area at a time since the paint dries quickly.

6. Paint wispy clouds in the sky by mixing one cup of paint with four cups of glaze. Use a sponge to dab white paint onto the sky, rolling and turning the sponge to make different cloud shapes. Soften the clouds by dabbing them with a damp cheesecloth.

7. Use the same technique to create waves and whitecaps in the ocean portion of the mural. Blend white with ocean blues to give the ocean depth and variation, which will make it look more realistic.

8. Remove the tape and tarps, and then replace the switch plates in the room.
