Bedroom Decorating Styles

Monochromatic bedrooms have simplicity.

A bedroom typically serves as a sanctuary and escape, and bedroom decor can express your innermost self. Decorate a bedroom to express its functions, such as a meditation area, study, home office, toddler play area or yoga room, and then add finishes, furnishings and accessories that lend the space unique style. Personalize your bedroom decor by hanging framed photographs and artwork above the bed, around a door frame or stacked vertically on a narrow wall.

Traditional Bedroom Decor

Traditional bedroom decor centers around matching or coordinated furnishings, typically in dark rosewood or cherry, or a lighter oak. A symmetrical arrangement of a bed flanked by nightstands and table lamps has a classic formality. Hang an elaborately framed mirror over the dresser and a large format oil painting over your bed's headboard. On the floor, Oriental rugs add depth of color and subdued patterns. Wall sconces around artwork create dramatic up-lighting while a chandelier over the bed gives the room sculptural detail. Wall colors and textiles tend toward neutrals, while throw pillows and chair cushions may provide a pop of color. Antiques or antique reproductions may include curved, skinny-leg chairs, tables and desks or an armoire with painted doors.

Modern Bedroom Decor

If you prefer a sleek, streamlined look, consider a modern bedroom. In this decorating approach, furnishings hug the ground so that natural light easily enters and travels through the space. Go mid-century modern with low-slung chairs in sleek, angular frames. For a more updated look, try chrome or stainless steel on furniture frames. Wall colors tend toward new neutrals, such as stone gray, warmer rosy gray, cream, pale yellow, industrial steel blue or soft poppy seed black. For a monochromatic look, invest in matching storage containers to stow away clutter and create a smooth profile. Track or recessed lighting finishes the look.

Eclectic Bedroom Decor

Culled from thrift shops, junkyards, yard sales, estate sales and flea markets, the pieces in an eclectic bedroom rarely match. Instead, coordinating background colors or eye-catching details helps bring the look together. Start with a vintage iron bed frame with a rococo headboard, or paint an old wooden door with a mural and place it on its side behind the bed. Paint tables, chairs, desks and nightstands bright, cheerful hues such as periwinkle, lime green or mango orange. Mismatched textiles in floral, paisley, fleur-de-lis, stripes, dots, ethnic motifs, patchwork and bold graphics add an artisan touch.
