Asian (Oriental) Bedroom Theme

There are many bedroom design ideas related to a particular region or ethnic group. The Asian continent, especially China and Japan, has decor themes that are widely known as a soft and conservative style that can gel with modern luxury. Oriental themes lend an exotic atmosphere of a cozy room. Use antiques, furniture, wallpaper and paint to build a real Asian bedroom interior.

Furniture

Use small, dark-wood, painted furniture, or furniture with very ornate design to enrich the Oriental-theme bedroom. The type of furniture depends on the era of Oriental culture you use for a theme base. If you are interested in ancient Chinese-inspired furniture, for example, these pieces typically are embellished with drawings, hand-carved or hand-painted pictures and a lacquer finish. Otherwise, use dark wood and old furniture to mimic Japanese style. Natural materials in furniture, such as bamboo, can also fit an Oriental theme.

Wall Color

Walls set the general tone of the room. Depending on your personal preference, there are many options for wall color in an Asian-inspired room. If you are unsure of your choice for an Oriental bedroom theme, don't start with a dramatic color on the wall. Instead, go for brown or even a sage green. If you want the room to feel immersed in Oriental ambiance, though, paint the walls a vibrant red or orange.

Accent Features

There are several ways to employ accents in an Oriental-theme bedroom. Pillows for the bed should be a mixture of colors, such as red, sage green and black. If you paint the walls red, try satin pillows in black and white. You could also try a pillow or two with Chinese characters on them. The bedspread should be white to contrast with all-black furniture. Having some bamboo and bonsai trees around would evoke feelings of Asia. Plants can be combined with a bowl with floating candles. A small sand garden would provide a Zen-like look for the bedroom.

Linens and Curtains

Bring color, interest and texture to an otherwise neutral decor with bed linens and curtains. Use silk bedding in an array of colors or patterns. Designs with pink cherry blossoms or drawings of black or red dragons have universal appeal for those wanting an Oriental feel in a bedroom. If you have a wall hanging or focal pieces on the walls, choose bed linens that don't clash with them. If your walls are neutral, choose bedding or curtains with colors or designs that add to the interest of the space.
