Organizing Ideas For Boy'S Bedrooms

Find middle ground between you and your son's ideas of organization.

Along with the homework, sports and socializing that make up a boy's life come the papers, racquets and sneakers that fill up his bedroom. "Clean your room" may translate to "Hide the mess under your bed and in your closet." Your boy probably spends about an hour a day searching for things he can't find because of the mess in his room, according to "Newsweek" magazine. Hooks, tubs and shelving add a sense of order to a boy's bedroom without taking away from his personal space.

Hooks

Sometimes boys leave messes because they want things to be easy to find. Your son may wonder, for example, why he should put his backpack in the closet when he grabs it each day to go to school. The same may be said for his jackets, baseball mitt or sports caps. Negotiate a compromise between your two points of view: hang a set of hooks on the wall in his bedroom for him to hang these items as soon as he enters. They'll be off the floor and he'll be able to grab them on his way out of the door.

Transparent Drawers

As with backpacks and jackets, your son may leave school supplies, movies and CDs lying around his bedroom so that they're easy for him to find. Buy a set of transparent plastic organizing drawers for him to place these belongings in and still be able to see them. Such drawers often have wheels, so he'll be able to move it around the room wherever he needs it at the time (to his desk for homework or to his bed to find a CD, for example). Choose blue, green or red drawers to match the decorations in his room.

Shelves

Shelves are for more than books. Sports, entertainment and even clothing items all fit nicely on shelves. Mount shelves to the wall in your son's room at a height where he can reach them. It will be out of his way until he needs something, and he can hang pictures and to-do lists on its sides. Place a wire shelf in his room for clothing, so that air can flow through the spaces and prevent odors. These are available in closet sizes, where he can place his shoes as well as his sports balls.
