Make A Zen Bedroom

Simplicity is key to Zen decorating.

If you're looking for a soothing way to redo your bedroom, consider going Zen. The Zen approach dedicates itself to simplicity and comfort. Neutral colors, calming space and a minimal amount of stuff is at the heart of this style. The trick to creating a Zen-like bedroom is focusing on the best way to utilize space. When you're finished, your bedroom will be one of the most peaceful places in your home.

Instructions

1. Pick a neutral color scheme for your Zen inspired bedroom. One primary color and two accent colors produce a nice, balanced effect. Off-white, beige, tan, black, brown and gray create a tranquil atmosphere.

2. Paint the walls a light color to promote an open, spacious atmosphere. Light beige, off-white or pale gray are pleasing options that work with other colors in the spectrum easily.

3. Buy streamlined furniture with simple designs. Simplicity means clean lines and very little ornamentation. Most Asian and modern furniture works well in the Zen bedroom because there is very little decoration on it. Use only what you need. Keep your room limited to the basic necessities, such as a bed, armoire, chair and nightstand.

4. Use flooring that is easy to maintain, such as polished wood or tile. Use a comfortable rug that brings the colors of your room together.

5. Use natural textures and designs. Water fountains, a bamboo table or a glass vase filled with rocks create a pleasing aesthetic. Harmonize with nature by adding natural items, such as rice paper, wicker, grass cloth and stone.

6. Hang window treatments that complement the Zen look and feel. Bamboo shades are a simple and effective option. Linen, sheer and muslin curtains are another. Avoid busy patterns and look for soft, solid colors that blend with the other colors in your room.

7. Choose elegant and useful accessories to keep your bedroom clutter-free. Install floating shelves on your walls and keep a smooth stone bowl handy to catch stray items like keys and change.

8. Arrange your bedroom with ease and balance in mind. Your bedroom should be easy to move through, and balanced objects should be in the room. Put the bed across from the dresser and a chair and a table in each corner.

9. Add potted plants to your bedroom to bring a touch of nature inside.
