Make My Bedroom A Nautical Room

A nautical bedroom is clean and simple, like a ship.

Whether you already live near the sea, or just wish you did, a nautical-themed bedroom can be a calming place to rest after a long day. Just how far you go with the nautical theme depends on you. Portholes can be cut in walls and a bed made into the shape of a boat. For a child, these are wonderful additions, but may be inappropriate for an adult. This theme could be over the top with nautical items or simple and sophisticated, depending on your taste.

Instructions

1. Paint your walls a color that fits with your idea of what a nautical theme should be. Simple white walls with dark blue trim evokes a simpler nautical theme, while painting the walls a darker blue and trimming with white makes a room more dramatic.

2. Create a border around the room with stencils or wallpaper borders. Find or cut out stencils that suit your nautical theme, such as sailboats, ship wheels, a compass or a lighthouse. Hold or tape the stencils in place with painter's tape and use latex or acrylic paints to fill in the stencil images. When the stencil is removed, the shape will remain. Continue around the room to create a border. A wallpaper border sticks to the wall with paste or by peeling and sticking the border to the wall.

3. Purchase sheets and a blanket or quilt with ships, ship wheels or navigational equipment on them and place them on your bed.

4. Hang light fixtures that look like the types found on older ships. Brass or silver lantern-like fixtures contribute to the nautical theme.

5. Frame maps of coastal regions and hang them on the walls, along with other accessories like ship wheels, mounted fish, fishing poles, cargo netting or shelves with model ships. Bait shops, outdoor outfitters, home decor stores, and sporting goods stores have real maps and other fishing and boating gear ideal for decorating.

6. Place area rugs made out of dried grasses, like raffia or sisal, around the room to add to the coastal or nautical theme.

7. Display a favorite nautical quote on your wall, either framed or painted directly on the wall.

8. Use wood furniture in darker stains to evoke the feeling of being on an old yacht or ship.
