Cheerful Bedroom Colors

Warm colors blend with exciting cool colors in a cheerful bedroom.

A cheerful bedroom is one that puts a smile on your face when you wake up. The colors, furnishings, textiles and window coverings are all pleasing to your psyche and contribute to your elevated mood. No color scheme will deliver an automatic sense of cheerfulness; that's where the human factor comes into the equation. Yet there are colors you can select when designing your bedroom decor that help create a cheerful mood and provide a starting point for brightening your day.

Choose Your Color Scheme

Colors give off a feeling of warmth or coolness, excitement or tranquility. Sir Issac Newton designed the first color wheel in 1666, and it is from that basic exhibit of 12 colors that you can see the line between warm and cool colors. The wheel allows you to visually play with the shades and tints that create an emotional feeling. Mixing the colors is create a color scheme for a room. Darker shades of green, blue and magenta are considered tranquil. Yellows, brighter greens, red and orange are warm colors. Mix colors from both sides of the wheel for a cheerful bedroom.

Work From the Bottom up

Terracotta, whether in carpeting, wood flooring or tile, is a cheerful floor color with which to begin your bedroom's transformation. It's not glaring, and it conforms to the warmer color palette. Avoid the hardness of sculpted carpeting, and go for the luxurious feel of plush carpeting. A terracotta floor tile or wood is a good base for showing off a dazzling magenta and yellow throw rug.

Bedroom Furniture

Avoid bedroom suites with all the furniture made of the same wood. Use color for excitement and cheerfulness. If your bed is white, paint it to avoid the glare of the white in your room. Don't go overboard. Instead, choose the lightest tint of pink, yellow or orange you can find. It should be almost white but with just a hint of color. Bedside tables painted a glossy darker shade of the color used on the bed is an exciting addition to your furnishings. A dresser, painted the same shade as the headboard but with decorative hardware, adds interest.

Textiles

Fabrics are where you can go to town when designing a cheerful room. Using the terracotta, pale pink, magenta and light and dark green color scheme, add yellow to the mix and the bedroom is glowing in happy colors. Floral patterns use all these colors. Geometrics in pink and orange or yellow and magenta add dazzle. Select a fabric that is soft, and the senses are tuned in to your decorating achievement.

Wall Color

Paint is the most versatile of the decorating options and is left for last because of the wide choice of colors available. Stay away from the boldness of loud colors. Your aim is to be cheerful, not noisy. A pale shade of any of the basic colors used in your room blends. Paint the crown and base moldings white semi-gloss and the ceiling the same color as the walls if your ceiling is low; use a slightly darker tint if the ceiling is very high. When all the elements of your bedroom decor are brought together, you've created a cheerful bedroom.
