For a timeless effect, select a versatile theme that you can individualize. Consider the mood you prefer, such as romantic or tranquil. Make notes of your color preferences and look through magazines and bedroom photos online for inspiration. Start with the basic furniture and bedding and add accessories to put the whole look together.
Tropical
Decorate your bedroom as a tropical paradise. Take inspiration from Hawaii, Indonesia or the South Pacific. A few key items will transform any bedroom into an island retreat. Put in a bamboo or wood bed with a large headboard. Consider adding a bamboo dressing screen and bamboo or reed blinds. Put in louvered closet doors and vintage lamps on dimmers, and install netting or sheers from a ceiling ring over the bed. Add tropical plants to give the room a lush and sensual feel. Bromeliads and anthuriums with their bright long-lasting flowers work well. Choose bedding in natural fibers such as linen or cotton. Place two extra large square pillows at the head of the bed for backrests. Use shades of green, gold and tan with red, scarlet or orange accessories.
Hollywood
Make your own Hollywood glamor boudoir. Put in a round bed or dress up a regular bed with a mirrored headboard. Add a vanity dresser with lighted mirrors and a vanity bench with a satin or velvet cushion. Dress the bed with satin sheets, a satin or velvet comforter cover, lots of round satin or velvet throw pillows, and chrome and glass night tables or black nightstands. Put in track lighting and some classic Hollywood posters or contemporary paintings in bold colors. Add a sheer fabric room screen for a dressing area or to hide exercise or home office equipment. Set a tall clear glass vase of red rose buds on the dresser. Put three white pillar candles on chrome holders on each nightstand. Go with black, white, silver, and red or pink for the color scheme.
Country Cottage
Transform your bedroom into a country cottage getaway. Create an escape to a simpler time. Choose a sleigh bed or four-poster and decorate it with a handmade quilt. Add pillow shams in a coordinating color. Put a quilt rack or old wooden chest at the end of the bed. Set matching on solid wooden nightstands. Use handmade doilies and vases of fresh or dried flowers. Add vintage accessories, such as hurricane lamps and a basin and pitcher set. Put braided rugs on each side of the bed. Make up the bed with eyelet-edged sheets, plain cotton, or flannel for the winter. Keep the colors soft and natural: blues, greens, yellows, white, cream, brown, or pink.
