Decorate Your Restroom

A small flower arrangement can brighten a restroom.

Today homeowners view bathrooms as much more than merely functional places for bathing and grooming. Families, especially the female members of households, consider them places to retreat to for a little pampering and relaxation. With some thought and effort, you can transform a plain-Jane bathroom into an elegant powder room where you will want to linger. Once you have rejuvenated the room's appearance, turn on some music, light a few candles and soak away life's tensions with a scented bath.

Instructions

1. Check the bathroom to see if it needs repairs. Although sometimes a leaky faucet can necessitate costly plumbing, you should attend to such matters before any decorating begins.

2. Replace the fixtures to the bath and sink if they are old.

3. Choose your color scheme. Vivid colors can add drama, while neutrals can be soothing and sophisticated. White can impart a clean look, while some shades of blue or green can be reminiscent of the ocean.

4. Coordinate the style and color with the adjoining bedroom. If you want to paint, it is permissible to go a shade darker or lighter than the bedroom, but continuing the general color into the bathroom will provide a pleasing sense of continuity. Likewise, you would not want to select a bathroom decorating style that is radically different from that of the bedroom.

5. Replace your shower curtain with a regular curtain. Hang it with a tension rod and back it with a shower curtain liner. For the most impact, position the curtain high up, close to the ceiling. Add a swag or valance with beaded fringe for extra glamour.

6. Consider replacing the overhead light with a mini chandelier. Such lighting fixtures need not be expensive, and they have the power to enhance the ambience dramatically.

7. Invest in an etagere. This metal piece of furniture can serve as a functional but elegant place to display bath items. Neatly roll up towels and place them in a basket. Use a crystal or cut-glass bowel to showcase scented soaps. Make a small flower arrangement in a lovely vase. Arrange these items attractively on the etagere.

8. Remove clutter from the lavatory area. If you don't have storage available for personal items such as your toothbrush, cup and cotton balls, store them in a set of matching accessories. You may purchase these inexpensively from a discount store

9. Add one or two plants to impart a feeling of freshness into the space.
