Install Cabinets In A Bedroom

Wood cabinets on your bedroom wall can be an interesting alternative to standard shelves. Installing them is basically the same process as installing them in a kitchen, except you have more leeway in how high to place them. As with all wall-mounted cabinets, it's a good idea to get the them pre-finished or painted (or pre-finish or paint them yourself before mounting), so you don't have to try to do that once they're on the wall.

Instructions

1. Measure the dimensions of the back of the cabinet, recording the height and width.

2. Mark out that measurements on the wall, drawing a level square with your level and pencil to show where the cabinet will be. Position the bottom line at the height you want the bottom of the cabinet.

3. Find each stud in the wall, within the marked square, using your stud-finding. Mark each of them with your pencil and level with vertical lines within the square.

4. Measure the positions of each of the stud lines from one vertical edge of the marked square. Mark out vertical lines in the same positions on the back of the cabinet. (Example: If the stud lines are 6 inches, 22 inches and 38 inches from one side of the marked square on the wall, then mark corresponding vertical lines on the back of the cabinet at 6, 22 and 38 inches from that end.

5. Drill pilot holes on each vertical line, putting two on each line, one of them six inches up from the bottom and the other six inches down from the top.

6. Re-load the drill with its screw-driver bit. Set the cabinet against the wall, lined up with the square that you drew.

7. Drill mounting screws through each pilot hole to secure the cabinet to the studs.

8. Test the cabinet for plumb (straight up and down) by holding your level vertically along the front of the structure and seeing if it's leaning forward or back. If so, loosen the screws along the top or bottom (depending on whether the top of bottom has to be moved forward to make it plumb) and shim behind it until it's straight.
