Teen Bedroom Ideas For Small Rooms

Teens have specific needs in their bedrooms.

Decorating a small bedroom can have some unique challenges. It can be difficult to fit and manipulate furniture in a small space. In addition, teens have specific needs in terms of furniture, work space and storage. The ideal seems to be creating a sort of apartment-within-the-house that gives the teen a bit of freedom, while also being a part of the family.

Paint

Paint is one way to create maximum impact on a room with minimal cost. In a small teen bedroom, focus on neutral or light colors, since lighter colors make the room appear larger. Another way to make it look more spacious is to paint the door and the trim the same color as the walls. If you would like to add a bit of color to the walls, use one wall as an accent wall and paint it in a bright color that your teen likes, such as purple or kelly green.

Storage

In a teenager's small bedroom, there is an increased need for adequate storage. Teens tend to have a lot of stuff including magazines, CDs and makeup. Create storage areas wherever you can. Use clear plastic bins under the bed to store items. Utilize wall-mounted bookshelves rather than ones that stand on the floor. Baskets are another tool to use in the bedroom. Place them in the top of the closet and also in corners of the room to hold miscellaneous items.

Work and Entertainment Space

Many teens have entertainment devices such as televisions and computers in their bedrooms. This can pose a problem in a small room. One way to address the issue is to mount the television on a wall. This is most easily done with a flatscreen television. A desk is also a necessary object in a teen's bedroom. It should provide enough room for a laptop. Mount a small desk to the wall, one that is specifically designed to be used with a laptop.
