Make A Diy Dining Room Banquette

Banquette seating is often found in restaurants.

A banquette is a style of seating similar to a bench. Banquette-style seating is usually positioned along a wall or forming an L-shape in the corner of a room. It often features upholstered cushioning for comfort and added storage within the bench itself. A banquette offers a convenient space-saving way to create seating without the necessity of individual chairs positioned around all sides of a table, though chairs can be added to one or two sides of the table for extra guests.

Instructions

1. Ascertain where the banquette will be positioned. Measure the floor to determine the length of the seating, and use a dining chair to determine the appropriate height and depth. Note down the measurements.

2. Cut two pieces of 3/4-inch plywood according to your length and height measurements to form the front and back pieces of the banquette. Cut two pieces according to your height and depth measurements to create two end pieces. Cut two pieces according to your length and depth measurements to create the bottom and top pieces.

3. Run a line of wood glue along the front edge of the bottom piece. Attach the front panel to the bottom piece and secure with finish nails. Repeat the process to add the back panel and then the two end pieces. Add 1 1/2-inch wood screws to properly secure the bench. Countersink these screws so they can be covered with filler later.

4. Frame the top of the bench with 1- by 4-inch hardwood, to support the weight of people sitting on the banquette. Cut two pieces according to the length measurement and attach them to the long sides of the top of the bench using wood glue and finish nails. Measure the distance in between the two long pieces of hardwood and cut two pieces to the correct length to fix to the short sides of the top of the banquette. Attach these pieces as you did the longer pieces.

5. Place the open-top banquette in its permanent position, ensuring it is level and sits flush against the wall. Reach in through the open top and use 3-inch wood screws to secure the bench to the wall studs.

6. Fix the top piece into position using wood glue and finish nails.

7. Cover screw heads with wood filler and allow to dry. Sand the filler to form a smooth surface.

8. Paint or stain the finished banquette. For added interest, the front can even be tiled. Cut a large piece of foam to the correct size to sit on top of the banquet and cover it with a fabric that complements the decor of the room.
