Design A Girl'S Toddler Bedroom

She's sugar and spice--design her bedroom with everything nice!

A child is called a toddler from about 1 to 3 years of age and is so-named because of her wobbling gait as she learns to walk. During this time period, toddlers will grow and change dramatically, gaining new skills and new independence. The nursery you used when your baby was first born may no longer be functional for your toddler. As you design her bedroom, consider factors such as budget, function, room size and how often you plan to redecorate.

Instructions

1. Create a budget and theme for your design. Factor in any items that you have in the current nursery that you will reuse, such as a crib that converts to a toddler bed or themes you wish to continue using.

2. Plan to paint the walls if you would like a change of color (select a washable finish), but consider a neutral shade that can grow and evolve with your toddler if you do not like the idea of repainting every time you plan to redecorate. Use accessories that are more easily changed to add color to your design.

3. Consider her furniture needs over the next few years. If you need to buy items, toddler-sized things will fit her now but she will outgrow them in a few years. While kid- or adult-sized items may be a bit large now, she will grow into them as she ages. She may still need elements of her nursery, such as a diaper-changing station, included in her toddler room, and she may still be sleeping in a crib until she is closer to 3 years old.

4. Design a place for her to be creative with toys and play if her bedroom will also function as her play area. Include shelving for her books and a toddler-sized table and chair, if room allows. Lots of flexible and easy-access storage bins will give her the independence to select toys and will also make it easier for her to begin cleaning up on her own when she is finished. Storage bins and bookshelves can change position and purpose as her needs (and height) change.

5. Select soft furnishings such as sheets and bedding to match your theme or color plan, but leave the fussy fabrics for later in her life. Items that are durable and easy to wash are good choices for a toddler.

6. Remember lighting needs for her room as you plan your design including natural, overhead and task. If she needs a nightlight, be sure to locate one where it will not shine in her eyes but will illuminate walking paths.

7. Get down on her level to view the room as you plan the design. Put things on the wall that she can easily see, pad any sharp corners, allow open floor space, keep her things where she can safely reach them and likewise keep things above her reach that you do not want her busy hands to find or pull down.
