Design A Teen Boy'S Bedroom

Encourage reading by creating a bookshelf---deep windowsills work great.

As your little boy grows into a teen his needs and likes will change. He'll no longer want shelves full of toys and stuffed animals, but rather, a more grown-up room with style. A teen boy typically has a busy life between school, friends and activities, so his bedroom should be both functional and cool.

Instructions

Design a Teen Boy's Bedroom

1. Remove all furniture and existing items so that the room is empty. Repaint the walls with a bright color using a roller, which makes it a quicker job. Just pour paint into a tray, dip your roller in it and roll the paint evenly onto the walls. Use a paintbrush or edger to get the areas you cannot get with the roller, such as the trim and corners. Allow to dry.

2. Paint the trim around the windows and doorways using a paintbrush and the second paint color---and it doesn't have to be white. Choose any color you think your teen would like. It can even clash with the wall color without creating a problem, as teen boys like color collisions. Finish the trim and then do the doors and kickboards. Allow the second color to dry. To make it even more fun, paint the ceiling a third color.

3. Apply the wall border and allow an hour for it to set. Bring the essential pieces of furniture back into the room once the paint has dried for 24 hours. Hang posters and wall art that are fun and represent things your teen loves, from nature and dirt bikes to outer space, technology, music and sports.

4. Put the new bed set on the bed and hang the new curtains, then bring your teen's other items back into the room. Arrange them neatly, adding storage containers to the room if needed. Set the commonly used items on shelves to display them and store toys and other items your teen still wants to keep but no longer uses out of sight. Stock the desk with pens, pencils, paper, notebooks and other school supplies. He'll use them if they are there. Make sure to display all of his books on a shelf or sill, because if they are in sight he'll read them more often.

5. Once everything is back in the room and neatly arranged it's time to call him in and see what he thinks.
