Retro Bedroom Ideas With Fuzzy Rugs

Fuzzy rugs add texture and softness to a room.

Creating a retro bedroom with fuzzy rugs not only satisfies your nostalgia, but the rugs feel fabulous on bare feet, dampen sound, add color inexpensively and offer an easy decorating strategy that you can readily change whenever you want to give the room a makeover. Choose a color scheme, accessories and coordinated bedding, and you'll create a retro bedroom full of personality. Although many retro looks rely on florescent colors, huge florals and giant geometrics, adding handmade accessories and a softer palette can create a soothing retro bedroom.

General Scheme

Fuzzy rugs in faux fur create a playful 70s retro look, evoking memories of 70s fashion and decor -- such as Sonny's vests on the "Sonny and Cher Show." This look also works for an over-the-top Austin Powers-type bachelor bad. Going all out with colorful bean bag chairs on a large shag area rug creates a fun and cozy retro bedroom. Bold colors, multicolored prints and playful accessories bring a retro bedroom to life. Pairing fuzzy rugs with more subtle accessories such as a soft floral quilt, a mobile of birds or butterflies and hand-embroidered or quilted pillowcases offers options for a feminine retro bedroom.

Color

A bright, monochromatic color scheme with fuzzy rugs works well for the retro bedroom. Bright shades of clear pink or raspberry, lime or avocado green, lemon yellow or harvest gold, fire engine red, electric blue or florescent orange will bring the 60s and 70s back in full swing. For a softer bedroom color scheme, baby blue, pastel pink, lavender, pale yellow and blue-green make for a soothing bedroom palette. Black and gray are popular retro accent colors, creating sharp contrast with all the bright colors.

Fuzzy Rug Options

Decorating the bedroom with multiple fuzzy rugs in different sizes and shapes, or all in one shape can create a whimsical effect. Fuzzy runners, large ovals, squares or rectangles on each side of the bed add color, while keeping your feet warm. Round fuzzy rugs scattered on a carpet create a polka dot effect, or multicolored square rugs laid end-to-end all over the room create a patchwork. One large fuzzy rug gives the bedroom a more spacious appearance and works well in a small room. For example, use a shag or fuzzy area rug that covers the bedroom to within one foot of the walls in each direction.

Finishing Touches

Lava lamps go well with fuzzy rugs.

Coordinated accessories such as a plush wastebasket, bright lampshades, lava lamps, posters or framed art that play up the main and accent colors for your retro bedroom theme will create a harmonious design. Adding a fuzzy toilet seat cover and matching rug to the bathroom, if the bathroom is visible from the bedroom, will make the two rooms work well together. Fuzzy or velvet patchwork accent pillows on the bed and on any seats in the bedroom will connect with the fuzzy rugs, as will patchwork quilts and faux animal print furniture.
