Red Bedroom Ideas

Red works nicely with white to create balance.

Red evokes a sense of passion, desire, sensuality and strength. Choose the shade of red you want, and coordinate it with other colors to create a sense of balance.

Red Walls

Surround the room with red, painting all four walls and the ceiling in your favorite shade. Paint the window frames white and use a white comforter on your bed. Accessorize with white throw pillows trimmed with red piping. Put a rug on the floor in the same shade of red you've put on the walls, but in a different tone.

Red Rugs

Find a large, red shag or faux sheepskin rug that covers most of your bedroom floor. Paint your bed black with a low-luster acrylic paint. Find or sew a red duvet that matches the shade of your rug exactly. Cover your bed with it or fold it over at the base of your bed to expose white and off-white linens. Place two large pillows at the top of the bed covered in striped fabric that includes the color red.

Red Bookcases and Toile

Purchase unpainted bookcases and paint them in the shade of red you like best. Ikea and other retailers stock red bookcases if you don't want to paint. Place the bookcases on one side of the room, and paint all four walls white. Attach white molding all the way around the room, two feet below the ceiling. Apply a red and white toile fabric or wallpaper on the wall space above the molding, and all over the ceiling. Make a duvet out of the same red and white toile fabric, and cover your bed with it. Paint the floors white, and add a black area rug on the floor near your bed.

Complementary Colors

The color red works well with green, its opposite on the color wheel. Paint a bedroom in reds that lean more toward shades of terra-cotta and deep raspberry and finish with subtle green accents in the light fixtures, decorative pillows, art and floor rugs. Moss green would work well with reddish terra-cotta, and a deep winter green would look nice with a raspberry red.

Wallpaper and Curtains

Choose wallpaper with a red background and a small floral print of another color. Or, choose from a collection of wallpapers that resemble red faux finishes. Consider wallpapers with giant red flowers such as one of the Marimekko prints (see "Resources" below), or choose from the large, red and white abstract and geometric prints at Ikea for floor to ceiling curtains, room dividers or wall hangings. Coordinate these fabrics and wallpapers with a black bed frame covered in white linens and large, square pillows covered in red fabric.
