Tile Ideas For Dining Rooms

Dining room tiles reduce carpet cleaning costs.

The dining room is one of the most-used rooms in your home. Because carpet is inexpensive, homeowners often choose it for their dining room floor. But maintenance costs for carpet add up quickly. Carpeting can be easily stained and soiled when food or drinks are spilled, which is frequent in homes with children. Consider installing decorative tiles for dining rooms instead. With decorative tiles you can beautify your living space and save money at the same time.

Slate Tile

Slate tile is made of natural stone.

Choose slate tile in your dining room if your home features an outdoors decor. Slate tile is chiseled, natural stone cut into tile squares for in-home installation. Unlike floor tiles made from man-made materials, slate tile is rough and textured. The natural grooves and cracks of the stone are lightly sanded to maintain its natural look. Slate tile is safe and comfortable to walk on. The tile are available in natural colors, including grays, browns, and other earth tones.

Carpetlike tile patterns

Use colored tile to create a ceramic throw rug.

If you lay your own tile, you can mix and match colors to make a custom design. Create an artistic effect with a ceramic tile throw rug in the center of the room under your dining room table. Choose one color of tile to cover the outer edges of the floor, from walls inward to where you want your ceramic rug. In the center, create a large square, round or rectangular pattern using different sizes and colors of tile that match the decor of your dining room. Contrast with the ceramic tiles used on the outer edges of the floor. When complete, it appears as if you have a decorative throw rug made of tile.

Checkerboard

Mix and match to create a checkerboard floor.

Checkerboard patterns continue to be a classic tile flooring style for kitchen and dining rooms. Choose two contrasting colors of tile that compliment the rest of your dining room decor. When installing, alternate the two colors forming a straight row. In the next row, reverse the color pattern so no two tiles of the same color meet anywhere but at the corners. This pattern will create a checkerboard effect. For added style, try creating a few straight rows in a boxlike outline around your floor, and lay the center tile rows on an angle to create a framed effect.
