Etiquette Rules For Bathrooms

Be polite when using a bathroom.

While it's not something people usually enjoy talking about, using a bathroom requires a certain etiquette. This is true for no matter what privy you're using--a home bathroom, a work bathroom or a public restroom. When you're using a bathroom, keep in mind that you should leave it in a way that someone else would want to find it. Always clean up after yourself and respect the space of others.

Stall

If you're using a public toilet, don't storm into a stall. It could be occupied, and if the door's lock is weak, you could break it and accidentally walk in on someone. Instead, proper etiquette dictates you actually bend down and look under the door for feet.

Toilet Paper

If you see that a stall is missing toilet paper, don't let someone else go without. Warn anyone you see about to go into an under-stocked stall, or if you feel comfortable, hand a wad of toilet paper under the stall. This might seem like it could be a breach of etiquette, but don't worry--it isn't. It's just being helpful.

Hair

Avoid brushing your hair over the sink and leaving strands or clumps of it. It's not hygienic, and the wet clumps can clog drains. If you need to brush your hair, make sure you clean up after yourself and toss any loose hairs in the garbage.

Roll

One etiquette rule for the home bathroom is to make sure you replace the toilet paper roll if you finish one. The next person to use the bathroom might not see that there isn't any toilet paper until it's too late. If there are only two or three squares left on the roll, it's also proper etiquette to replace it then.
