Decorating Bedroom Ideas With Inspiring Photography

Turn a simple bedroom into a source of inspiration with photography.

Using inspirational photography, you can take a boring and mundane bedroom and create the visual work of art. Inspirational photography can be found in most art galleries, at online e-commerce sites and in your own digital camera. Incorporating modern printing options, simple textile fabrics and traditional found objects, you can turn your bedroom into a peaceful, tranquil environment filled with inspirational artwork.

Framing Traditional Prints

Traditional matting and framing options for your artwork are an excellent way to incorporate inspiring photographs with existing decor. Work with enlargements that are larger than 11x14 inches to draw attention to your image and use a mat and frame combination that does not distract from the artwork with bold colors or ornate frame decorations. Consider having a focal image in a large, 20x24-inch format as the main image in your room and placing smaller, complementary images surrounding the large print.

Using Large-Scale Canvas Printing

Printing your inspirational photograph on a large textured canvas is another excellent means of decorating your bedroom. The image is printed on a painter's canvas at a professional printing lab and stretched over a wooden frame, just as an oil painting would be stretched before applying paint. Your images do not need a frame and can be hung directly on the wall, making the artwork itself the focal point of your decor. Use uniform sizes and place them symmetrically throughout your room. Or, print one large image, a 20x24-inch print or larger, and surround the image with smaller supporting canvas prints.

Transferring Prints to Textiles

With the advent of printing technology, applying images to textiles and fabrics is no longer an expensive endeavor. The options are limitless for textiles and images. You can create textiles with inspiring images to support the artwork on the walls by adding images to pillows, blankets and lampshades. Using a digital image and iron-on transfer paper, you can put your photography on any surface to which you can apply an iron. (See Reference 1.) Another artistic option is to take a long, thin, hanging piece of material and add multiple images equally spaced vertically on the fabric. Then place the hanging-image textiles throughout your bedroom.

Using Recycled Architectural Embellishments

Get creative with old building parts, such as windowpanes, glass tabletops and barn doors. Mount your inspiring photography onto the individual glass panes of your old window frame and hang this as a divider in your bedroom or on the walls. Take an old glass tabletop and place images underneath the glass. Then add inspiring text with paints to the wood surface of the table. Prop an old barn door against your wall and add 8x12-inch prints to the wood with Plexiglas covers and mirror wall mounts. Combining old, recycled building elements with photographs is an excellent method for adding character and vintage flair to your room.
