Add a Master Bedroom
A house seems more luxurious if it has a master bedroom. This space will be larger than a typical bedroom and have a larger closet and bath. There are ways to gain extra space from hallways, closets or adjoining bedrooms. A master bedroom should add value to your home provided it doesn't take away a third bedroom or hallway that is needed to create good traffic flow in the house.
Instructions
1. Measure the central space you will use for the master bedroom. Evaluate adjoining areas in a bedroom next door or a hallway to see where you can borrow additional space. A master bedroom should have enough room for a king-size bed and sitting area. Taking closet space from an adjoining bedroom can help make the room bigger. You also can combine two small bedrooms into one master bedroom.
2. Tear out any walls in adjoining space you will borrow for the master bedroom. Make sure you have an expert carpenter on hand to direct how you will support walls you knock out. Some walls might be load-bearing walls, be aware of what walls you will not be able to take down without first adding supports for the ceiling and roof. Add support posts and beams into doorway framing, which will open as part of the master bedroom.
3. Frame all perimeter walls and designated closet space. Frame in a bathroom area, if possible. Run electric wiring through studs and into ceiling areas. Install electrical outlets in appropriate places. Examine the ductwork and vents in the master bedroom to make sure it will be properly heated and cool upon completion. Cover all walls with drywall and finish with joint compound. Install light fixtures and outlets.
4. Install crown modeling around the ceiling area of the master bedroom. Add molding in all other appropriate areas. Hang closet doors and the door leading out of the bedroom. Paint all walls with flat or semi-gloss paint. Stain the woodwork if necessary.
5. Put down wood flooring or tile in the master bedroom. Finish off the room by putting baseboard materials around all walls and inside closet space. Put up wire or wooden shelving in the closet space. Install bathroom fixtures and light fixtures.
