A welcome look to any dining room is a nice table runner, a painting on the wall or beautiful curtains highlighting your windows. To create that special look you are going for, here are a few dining room curtain ideas to get you started. Take your time selecting the type of curtain you want, followed by the fabric pattern and colors you desire. Whether your style is formal or more relaxed, you're sure to find something that suites you.
Formal Dining
To create a formal look to your dining room, you'll need to go with a look that is chic, romantic and dramatic. Crisp lines or long curtains that drape to the floor with sweeping valances can often fulfill this look. Try hanging four relaxed rod-pocket curtains on one rod with the middle two curtains being sheer and the outer two made from a large-patterned fabric. Slip a shower curtain loop over the ends of the rods, and run the sheer inner curtains through them to create a draping swag and frame the window at the same time.
Often, a large balloon valance can give a formal look to the room if a swooping swag doesn't seem to fit. You can also try a scalloped valance over sheer curtains if you need to block out the view from neighbors. Try to stick with fabrics that use only one or two colors to keep the look of your dining room formal. For example, a mix of a deep red tab-top curtain with a cream sheer curtain behind it can give that fine-dining feel. Avoid plaids for a formal setting unless you are certain they coordinate with the rest of the room.
Relaxed Dining
For a relaxed, informal-style dining room, try using simple valances with whimsical patterns. A small tab-top valance with button or bow closures, or window-length curtains with a tieback on either side should do fine. Depending on the style of window you have, you can use lacy cafe curtains that only block the view from about chest level down. Just be sure to avoid stiff lines, such as rolling shades or long, floor-touching curtains, which will make the room look more controlled and less cozy.
When selecting the curtains for your informal dining room, try to use fabrics that have large, simple flowers, gingham prints, or small, monochromatic stripes. These fabrics, as well as the way they are used to make a curtain, should give your guests a breezy and fun feel. If you are making the curtains, take the time to purchase extra fabric for matching tablecloths, table runners or chair cushions.
