Many occasions that bring families together include the sharing of food. Preparing the food is certainly a major part of how well the meal will be enjoyed. However, the dining room décor also plays an important part in the presentation of the meal. The colors that a homeowner selects for her can help to determine whether family and guests want to eat and run or linger for conversation.

1. Select colors to coordinate with existing curtains or draperies. The wall color and window treatments must be compatible since they are side by side. If the curtains are patterned in several colors, select a background wall paint color that echoes the tone of one of the colors featured in the curtains. If the room is decorated with solid-colored window treatments, select a wall color that is lighter than that of the window coverings.
2. Paint the walls a color that exists in the room already, such as a color featured in the chair cushions or an area rug, to tie the room together. For added color, when hanging pictures on the wall, select matting in a similar but less dominating color than the cushions or rug.
