Remove Old Bathroom Caulk

Replace the caulk around your tub to maintain a watertight seal.

Caulk is a material placed in between cracks between tubs and sinks and the walls behind them. It creates a watertight seal so water doesn't get through and begin to mold. You can replace caulk every few years to keep the seals as tight as possible. Before you can add new caulk, however, you must scrape away the old caulk.

Instructions

1. Apply caulk solvent all along the caulking strip you want to remove. Allow the solution to sink in according to the manufacturer's instructions. All caulking solvents are slightly different and require different times to set.

2. Scrape away the caulk with a utility knife. Place the knife against the caulk, and run it along the caulk line while providing pressure. The caulk will begin to flake off. You can remove a majority of the caulk using the knife.

3. Remove excess caulk with needle-nose pliers or the painter's 5-in-1 tool. Place the pliers inside the open crack, grab the remaining caulk pieces and pull them out of the crack. If they are still not coming out, slide the painter's tool into the crack, and use pressure to remove the remaining caulk.

4. Clean the entire area with a nonammonia bath cleaner to remove any soap scum from the area. Select one that isn't harsh on your tub surface.
