Making sure your family and friends have ample room around the table can help ensure a successful party.
Chair Clearance
When setting up a dining room table and chairs for your everyday dinners or for special parties, the rule of comfort is the same. There should be enough space between the individual place settings as well as enough clearance room for diners to leave the table if necessary without disturbing others around them.
The clearance rule for space required around any table is a minimum of three feet. While four feet is optimal, three feet is enough to slide a chair out and step away from the table without bumping into walls or furniture.
Considerations
It is important to note that the previous guidelines are for typical dining rooms in homes. If you are setting up chairs and tables for a major sit-down event where there will be a buffet or servers, more aisle space will be needed. When planning for setup of these events, an average of 12 to 14 feet clearance behind the chairs is best.
Space at the Table
Along with making guests are happy with the space behind them for getting up or for being served, make sure there is also enough room between guests. The lateral rule between plates is commonly 24 inches. This number may, however, be less if you are in a less formal affair with close friends and family. Anything less than 12 inches, though, is too cramped.
