Frame A Bathroom Mirror With Molding

Frame a Bathroom Mirror With Molding

When contractors build homes, they often install a plate glass bathroom mirror flush against the wall. This provides a nice reflection, but it's not always a stylish look. To dress up a mirror, you can buy a mirror frame for it or you can make one out of frame molding. The process is simple enough if you have basic carpentry skills. The hardest part is getting the corners mitered so they fit well together. In many instances you can purchase frame molding with the corners already cut, which makes this project even easier.

Instructions

1. Measure the length and width of the mirror. Measure the mirror's thickness as well.

2. Select frame molding that has a rabbet cut on the back side of it. The rabbet is an indentation along the inside edge of the molding that hides the edge of the plate glass mirror. The rabbet cut should be at least as wide as the thickness of the mirror.

3. Cut the molding to fit around the mirror. If you purchased pre-cut molding, skip this step.

4. Apply wood stain to the front and back sides of the molding with a soft cloth. Allow the stain to set for a few minutes, then wipe it off with a clean rag. Let the stain cure for at least two weeks before proceeding. This helps to avoid any adverse reaction with the glue used in the next steps.

5. Mix epoxy according to its package directions. Apply it to the molding where it comes in contact with the mirror. Use a craft stick or an old paintbrush. Take care to not get epoxy on the exposed portion of the mirror. Set the molding in place on the mirror taking care to match the corners.

6. Tape the wood molding in place with painter's tape. Allow the epoxy to dry completely before removing the tape.
