Rustic Bedroom Ideas

Richly colored wood adds instant rustic appeal to this bedroom.

Rustic d cor includes natural colors and textures, plans and old-fashioned items. Natural colors often include muted tones in shades of green, brown, blue, orange, red, yellow, white and dusky lavender. The occasional bold color adds that "something" to this design. Old-fashioned items include aged tools, toys, hunting and farming equipment. Whatever you choose to add, it should have an aged appearance for the most believable impact.

Lodge Bedroom

A rustic lodge bedroom includes many natural elements. Use aspen or poplar trunks for bedposts or wall d cor. Additions of wrought iron elements give a grounded effect, pulling the room together. Good d cor for this room includes animal mounts, wrought iron woodland animal cutouts, soft, yellow lighting, black silhouettes on the walls and windows and heavily textured fabrics. Colors to use include shades of soft white, soft black, blue, green, orange and brown.

Alaskan Wilderness Bedroom

If you're artistically inclined, create an Alaskan wilderness in your home. Try painting the ceiling black with varying shades of deep blue, silver and white. Then apply a finish to resemble the aurora borealis. To catch the light, apply mica powder and glow-in-the-dark paint sparingly throughout the sky mural. Use tiny, recessed lights or Christmas lights to mimic stars. Paint murals on the walls as well. Purchase stencils or use a projector as a guide for your sketches. It is helpful to use real photographs as painting guides---this ensures you match the natural colors of animals and plants. For added appeal, add houseplants throughout the room. Try adding a cluster of Norfolk Island pines for a truly wooded feel. If you like this idea but cannot paint, try finding peel-and-stick wall murals for sale. Play sound recordings of distant winds and the occasional calling wolf pack to fall asleep to. Appropriate mood lighting includes crisp or soft blue and white bulbs.

Old Farmhouse Bedroom

For a rustic country appeal, try decorating your room to look like an old farmhouse. Apply real or faux clapboard to the walls. If you appreciate wooden floors but not their cost, try painting the bare floor to resemble wood planks. Apply a distressed whitewash finish to the floors and walls. Seal the floor with matte polyurethane. Decorations include distressed metal and wooden farm animals, punched tin lighting and ceilings, colorful braided rugs, checkered curtains, handmade cotton quilts and pillows, and cedar trunks. Mood lighting is crisp, white light. Christmas lights also go well.
