Turn a closet into an office to make the most of the space.
In a small bedroom that barely has room for a bed, it can be difficult to fit in a work space. When you need a desk but don't have the floor space, consider modifying the closet to hold a custom desk. With careful preparation, you can create a desk without sacrificing all of the functionality of the closet.
Fold-Down Desk
If you have need of a desk only on an occasional basis, make one that will be easy to put away. Use hinges to attach a small desktop to the back wall of your closet and add a bracket on the bottom that will fold out to support the top. When the desk is folded up against the wall, secure it with a simple hook-and-loop closure. You can flip the desk down anytime you have need for the work surface.
Storage Support
To create a desk space and create additional room to store your clothes, use drawer units as supports. Find a desktop that fits the width of your closet. Instead of securing it to the wall, slide in small shelving or drawer units. Depending on the width of the closet, you may want to use more than two to increase the available space. If you want to leave room for hanging clothes, choose a narrower desktop and move the storage units in closer.
Remove Doors
In a small bedroom, the closet doors can get in the way and take up valuable space. By removing them you can free up additional room for your desk or clothing. Because the open closet office space can make the room look cluttered, replace the doors with a covering. Buy tall fabric panels, install a tension rod above the closet, and hang the panels to cover the opening. You can slide them across when you are not using the desk space.
Built-in Shelves
Most closets have some wall space that goes unused. Install a desktop at the height you need while sitting. This will depend on the chair you intend to use. Above the desktop, leave about 2 feet of open space for a work area. In the space above and below, install shelves about every foot. You can store folded clothes on the shelves and use bins and boxes to organize office supplies and accessories. The shelves will help keep the closet in order and allow you to create a custom work space and clothing storage system.
