Choose The Best Master Bedroom Colors

Color makes for a soothing master bedroom.

The master bedroom should be a sanctuary, a retreat at the end of a busy day. The feeling you create is up to you, as the colors you choose for your safe haven are based on different factors. You may desire your master bedroom to have a romantic feel or perhaps you're looking for something more playful. You may prefer muted colors or brighter hues. Whatever atmosphere you want, you can achieve it with basic information about choosing colors.

Instructions

1. Choose a decorating style. Study books like "Country Living's Easy Transitions: Bedrooms" by Janice Easton-Epner. Magazines like "Martha Stewart Living" are full of tips. Your color choices will depend on the type of décor you choose. Select pale shades of blue partnered with crisp white in a cottage style room. Consider yellows, oranges and reds for a Tuscan flair.

2. Decide on the mood you want to create. Choose soft shades for a soothing feel. Pastels like soft pink, light yellow, lavender and baby blue lend themselves to a calm space. Neutrals like creams, beiges, grays and light brown shades work well with more vivid colors like a brightly colored quilt. Set a brighter mood with stimulating colors like red, green, yellow, orange, purple or blue on an accent wall or chair upholstery, window treatments, floor coverings and bed linens.

3. Choose three colors from a multicolored object already in your room. This can be anything from throw pillows to your favorite colorful scarf. Take the object to the paint store and select paint strips in shades of the three colors your chose. Decide which color you like best and paint the walls with it. Use other shades on the ceiling, mouldings, accessories, floor coverings, linens and window treatments.

4. Consider the room's architectural features. Enlarge and brighten a dark room with light colors. Employ darker shades to make a large room more intimate. Combine light and dark shades to make a narrow room appear wider by painting the short walls in a dark shade and using pastels on the long walls. Visually lower the ceiling by painting only three quarters of the way up. Make a low ceiling appear higher by painting all the way to the ceiling, including the moulding.

5. Observe the room's light patterns. If you are torn between paint colors, buy a pint of each. Paint poster boards with each color. Move the test boards around the room a few times a day to see how light affects them before making a decision.
