Tween Girl Bedroom Decorating Ideas

Paper lanterns in a tween girl's bedroom create a unique and exotic look.

Tween girls are at that stage in life where they are growing out of their little girl interests, but are not yet ready to become a young woman. This is an in-between stage of life that can be both exciting and a little bit frightening. Your daughter might be ready to throw out her princess bedding, but not quite ready to get rid of her favorite teddy bear. Help ease her transition into the teenage years by giving her a tween bedroom she's sure to adore.

Avoid themes

Tween girls know what they like, and what they like can change rapidly. Ditch the old Dora theme, and decorate with colors and patterns rather than in a new theme. Your daughter may want to change her posters as she gets older, but classic patterns and colors can remain the same. Paint the walls in her favorite colors instead of papering the walls with her favorite superstar, but leave room for a poster or two. Splurge on a high-quality bedding set, and accent it with trendy throw pillows that can be changed as fashions change.

Create space

As children age, they begin to use their room as a hang-out area instead of a play area. Create a space for hanging out by placing a bean bag or two on the floor, or a video-game chair if she likes video games. Move the dollhouse out and install a flat-screen television if you are feeling particularly generous. In addition, create space for studying. She will enter middle school soon, if she hasn't already, and she will need to devote more time to homework. Purchase a sturdy but cute desk and some storage cubbies for paper, pens, and books. Aim the desk away from the TV. Hang a fabric-covered bulletin board over the desk for important notes and photos, and let her pick out a cool lamp.

Make it funky

Finally, make her room a place that her friends will squeal about in delight. The television might go a long way towards that goal, but also consider adding unique elements that are inexpensive and fun. For example, a beaded curtain instead of a closet door is unusual and funky. A chandelier in the place of a ceiling light adds elegance. A cluster of paper lanterns hung at different lengths over a bed creates an unusual and cool canopy. Use chalkboard paint on the wall, and frame it with ceiling molding. Let her friends write messages on the chalkboard. Finally, make sure that your tween girl has input. While it might be fun to surprise her with a fully decorated room, it is more important to let her have the deciding factor in decorate it.
