Simple changes can make a kids room fun, fashionable and functional.
Designing and decorating a young girl's bedroom can be a fun adventure but also challenging. A child's bedroom should be fun and functional, but also reflect the child's taste and personality. Ideally, parents should work to achieve a place that works for rest, reading and schoolwork, but also as a retreat for activities. The space should be adaptable and change as the child grows. From bright colors to bold patterns, there are a plethora of styles that will make both kids and parents happy.
Neutral foundation
To get the most use of a space, a neutral foundation may be the way to go. Keep the wall color, carpet and ceiling a plain or neutral color and brighten it up with furniture and accessories. For girls who change favorite colors often as they grow, this is an easy way the room can change with them. Incorporate bedding and window coverings in a favorite color or in bold patterns, then add a throw rug, shelves and lighting in a similar or opposing shade. Additional decorations can include stenciling, borders on the ceiling, framed art or hanging organizers. By using existing pieces and altering them over time, keeping a decorated a girl's room updated won't bust your budget.
Bold Color Combinations
Adding color is one of the quickest and most effective ways to change the feel of a space for a young girl. Paint is one of the cheapest and easiest ways to accomplish a big change in a short amount of time. Fresh paint creates a cleaner, more vivid look, and can even make a small space appear larger or a large space more cozy. For a truly kid-friendly space, bright, bold colors are a favorite, and several bold colors can work together to make a perfect space. Current favorites are combining pink and black, aqua blue and chocolate brown, or red, pink and orange. All of these can be combined with flooring, furnishings and window treatments to make them stand out, but not seem overwhelming.
Themes
Themes are probably the simplest design strategy, especially for younger girls. Themes can be gender-specific or unisex, and designs can use a neutral backdrop or go all out with murals, paint and other special touches. Incorporate special toys, crafts, books or other touches to make the space educational and fun. Themes can be found in activities--dance or music, or favorite cartoon characters--Disney princesses or Winnie the Pooh. For a more creative touch, create a gender-neutral jungle theme, but add while flowers, butterflies, and ladybugs for a soft girlie touch. Add to the theme by including bedding, shelves, art and stenciling around the room to pick up the colors in the theme.
