Choose a paint that accentuates the theme or feel of the bedroom.
If one-third of your time is spent sleeping, you will want to make your bedroom as pleasant as possible. In addition to a comfortable bed and nice furniture, how you paint your walls will also help contribute to a nice atmosphere in your bedroom. Whether you like bold, bright colors, muted pastels or shades of white with accents, painting design ideas for your bedroom walls abound.
Themes
If you have a theme going in your bedroom, such as nautical, flowers, animals, beach or country, you can carry that over to the bedroom walls. Choose colors that accent the theme, such as navy and white for a nautical theme or beige and light blue for a beach theme. You can buy stencils and add flowers to your walls or paint animal patterns, such as leopard spots or zebra stripes. For kids' bedroom walls, extend a space theme by painting the walls dark blue and adding stars using glow-in-the-dark paint or for a mermaid theme use fish and coral stencils.
A Different Look
Different painting techniques can produce various looks and textures on the wall. Faux techniques such as ragging, rag rolling, color washing, crackling and sponging provide relatively easy ways to achieve looks you can not get from a roller or paint brush. Using textured paint can add depth and richness to a bedroom wall. Faux finishes, such as leather, marble, suede, denim, clouds and brick can create dramatic effects in your bedroom. For some of the faux finish techniques you will need specific tools, such as a leather faux finish stippling brush or a denim faux finish weaver brush and check roller. Faux finishes may also require certain glazes or paints to create the look you want.
Murals
Murals offer a large variety of options for bedroom walls. In kids' rooms, you can paint characters and whole scenes from their favorite cartoons on their walls. In a teen's room, create a wave for your surfer or add musical notes and guitars for your musician. In your own bedroom, design a French countryside scene, complete with the Eiffel Tower in the background. If you have natural artistic abilities, you may want to freehand the drawings on the wall and paint them. For those with limited art skills, an overhead projector will allow you to cast a scene on the wall for you to trace and then paint. When painting a mural, use high quality paints and brushes.
