Tiny bathrooms can be challenging to decorate.
Many houses have a tiny second bathroom built for convenience rather than space. When faced with decorating this type of small space, a makeover can be as simple as replacing a few key bathroom elements or as complex as a new paint job. Before choosing a new decor, evaluate your budget and time frame and determine the level of change you'd like to make.
Change the Curtains
If your bathroom has a shower, changing the shower and window curtains can make a significant visual difference. Choose a clear curtain or glass door to increase the visual space in the room. The same goes for any windows; look for sheer curtains to continue the line of sight. The fewer boundaries the eye hits as it scans a tiny room, the larger the room will appear.
Add Shelving
To increase the storage space in a tiny bathroom, install shelves. Look for shallow, low-profile shelves and install them high on the wall. The height will automatically draw the eye upward, creating a sense of higher ceilings and greater vertical space. Limit the amount of shelving you use, and consider using clear shelving to eliminate the number of visual obstructions in the room.
Paint
In a tiny bathroom, a quick paint job can change the atmosphere significantly. If your bathroom is very dark or very colorful, repaint the walls in a pale shade. The light color will automatically brighten the room and make it seem more open. This is particularly effective in bathrooms without much natural light.
Limit Color
Too many different colors in a small space can make it seem chaotic and overwhelming. For an easy bathroom makeover, choose one color and replace towels, soap dishes and curtains with items in variations of that color. By limiting the color palette, you will limit visual chaos. The color choice makes all the difference; accessories in a vibrant shade create focal points and energy, while pale colors create a more open, relaxing feeling.
De-clutter
If you are looking for a fast and inexpensive bathroom update, eliminate everything that is not absolutely necessary. By eliminating visual clutter, you will automatically create additional space. Hide cleaning supplies under the sink or in another room, put toiletries in the medicine cabinet, and remove any knickknacks from sight.
Add a Rug
If your bathroom is too tiny to add shelving, or if you do not have the budget to repaint or replace the accessories, consider adding a floor mat or rug. In such a small space, a tiny rug can make a big difference. Look for a rug that can be easily washed after getting wet, and find one in a bright color to serve as a focal point; avoid busy patterns, which often serve to make a space look smaller.
