Create A Japanese Style Bedroom For Preteens

The cool, flowing spaces that characterize Japanese design make ideal preteen bedroom decor. The basic, simple lines of Japanese style mean that you can update and accessorize their look as your preteen's aesthetic preferences change. Personalize your preteen's Japanese bedroom decor by integrating images of favorite Manga cartoon characters or by painting your child's name with Kanji lettering.

Instructions

1. Paint bedroom walls a soothing, neutral tone. Some options include sage green, espresso brown, sand, pale terra-cotta, stone gray, faded yellow or cream. Stick with a semi-gloss or satin finish to camouflage fingerprints, scuffs and dirt.

2. Decorate walls with stencils. The Japanese aesthetic is pared down and natural, so consider a mellow wall trim of ivy, leaves, branches or pebble motifs.

3. Select low-slung, modular furniture that hugs the floor. Minimalism reigns in Japanese bedroom decor, with lightweight wooden furniture frames. A platform-style bed may hold a simple futon mattress, while a series of box shapes form a cupboard or armoire.

4. Control clutter with storage containers. Preteens often fill spaces with media, papers, school supplies, toys and sports equipment. If you provide ample, flexible and convenient storage, your child can maintain the clear surfaces associated with Japanese design. Invest in a series of boxes, buckets or baskets with similar finishes to create a streamlined look.

5. Add graphics, patterns and subtle texture with textiles. Woven cotton and linen fabrics contrast well with the wood tones found in Japanese decor. Pale sheers may cover windows, while a pattern featuring a bolder splash of red, orange or cobalt may decorate bedding. A rattan or bamboo mat on the floor lends the space texture.

6. Illuminate a Japanese bedroom with paper lanterns. A bouquet of paper or silk lanterns overhead gives a Japanese bedroom a pop of color. Wire some for lighting or place them directly over fixtures.
