Paint A Bedroom Ceiling

Using a paint roller makes painting ceilings easier.

To change up and refresh the look of a bedroom, people often focus on painting the walls. However, the ceiling of the room should not be left out. Select a darker paint color for the ceiling to make the room more intimate and appear smaller. Choose a lighter ceiling color if you want to brighten the room and give the illusion of a higher ceiling. No matter how you want to paint the bedroom, you should paint the ceiling before you work on the walls.

Instructions

1. Remove all of the furniture from the room that you can and push any larger items to the center of the room. Cover the floor and any remaining furniture with drop cloths to protect them from paint splatter.

2. Wash down the ceiling (and walls, if needed) to clean away dirt, dust and any mildew with an all purpose cleaner or a pre-painting wall cleaner (e.g., one that contains trisodium phosphate) according to the instructions on the label. Work in 3-foot-square sections at a time until the entire ceiling is clean. Let the ceiling dry for two to four hours before painting.

3. Use a sash brush (a paintbrush with bristles shaved to a pointed edge rather than a blunt edge) to paint around the edges of the ceiling where it meets the wall. If you don't have a sash brush, line the upper edge of the wall with painter's tape. Use a 3-inch brush to paint a 3-inch border around the ceiling so you don't have to use the paint roller against the edges.

4. Paint the remainder of the ceiling with a paint roller, starting in the farthest corner from the door and working in 3-foot-square sections at a time. Within each 3-foot area, work a paint roller in large W shapes, moving back and forth, adding more paint as needed, until the square is complete.

5. Continue to paint across the ceiling until the last square area is complete. Allow the paint to dry for two to four hours, or longer if your paint brand recommends. Apply a second coat as required to fully cover a previous color, coat a textured ceiling well or make sure your color choice is at its full intensity.
