Sink drains often give off foul odors that sometimes attract flies.
Fruit flies can invade your home any time of the year, but they are most common during the summer and fall months. They flock to drains in search of a moist environment. It may be difficult to stop them from getting into your home all together, but when you're dealing with an infestation, take precautionary methods to avoid as many future infestations as you can.
Instructions
1. Scrub the sink area with all-purpose cleaner. Use hot water and a scouring pad or toothbrush to get all of the scum off the upper drain, as this will continue to attract flies if it remains. Rinse the sink with more hot water, and allow to drain.
2. Use red wine vinegar to get rid of fruit flies. Substitute with apple cider vinegar if necessary. Place the vinegar in a small bowl, and place the bowl close to the bathroom sink. Leave the bowl there until all of the flies are floating in it, then dump down the drain and rinse or flush down the toilet.
3. Inspect your window screens and storm doors, as the fruit flies may be originating from outside. Repair small holes in screens, as these flies only need a tiny tear in order to get inside. Replace screens if necessary to prevent the flies from entering.
4. Check for other places where the fruit flies may have originated. Disinfect the trash cans throughout the home and keep them clean. Place a fresh trash bag into each can every day if necessary. Purchase new trash cans with lids to help to keep the flies out.
5. Keep only fresh fruit and other foods in the kitchen, as rotting foods will attract fruit flies which can then spread to the bathroom. Be sure to rinse recyclable beer and soda cans so they don't attract flies.
