A boy's bedroom can often be filled with toys, sports and video equipment, leaving little room for decorating. If you want your son's room to please him but also stand up to visitors, consider updating its look. By following a theme, you can give the room a fresh look without costing a fortune.
Nautical
A nautical theme is a traditional way to decorate a boy's bedroom. If your child is young, consider using a stencil to create a sailboat border. Add blue and white striped curtains that are cut from a bed sheet and tie them back with white nylon boat rope. Use a round life preserver from a boating supply store such as Boaters World to create a mirror. To do this, add hot glue to the back of the life preserver and attach to the front of the mirror. You can hang the mirror by tacking a frame bracket to the back of the preserver or using two eye hooks and stringing wire across the back. For older boys, add model ships that they build themselves or ships in a bottle to create a more mature look.
Sports
If your child is a sports fanatic, tailor the bedroom to reflect his favorite sport. For example, if your child loves a specific football team, purchase bedding that is in that team's colors. You can often find NFL or college material in the sewing section of places like Walmart for less than $4 per yard. To stay within budget, make a valance or pillows with the specialty fabric. For the bedspread, choose a coordinating solid color, which will be less costly.
Frame posters of your son's favorite players in inexpensive poster frames that can be found at discount stores and arts and craft stores. Look for coupons to arts and craft stores; you can often find discounts for up to 40 percent off. You can also decorate a plain lamp shade using stickers or sports cards. Adhere them on to the lamp shade using decoupage medium.
Electronics
For boys who are more into electronics than sports, opt for a gamer theme. Create classic video game icons for wall art such as a Pac-Man that are made from foam core poster board. Trace a circle on yellow poster board. Cut a wedge for the mouth and attach it to the wall using two-sided Velcro. For other classic icons, check out free clip art sites such as Kaboose.com to blow up and print. You can then use the clip art to decorate lamp shades, curtains or pillows using iron-on transfer paper. Make sure you save room for a wall unit to house all of your son's video games and accessories.
Search thrift stores or budget furniture stores to find an inexpensive entertainment center. Paint it a glossy black using spray paint and firmly attach the center to the wall. Make a stencil using video game fonts you can download from The Almighty Guru database, and personalize the cabinet with silver paint. Use video game titles, phrases or your son's name.
