Examples Of Dining Rooms Colors & Designs

Design your dining room based on the needs of your family.

Choosing the color and design for your dining room should be based entirely on how you plan to use the room. For fancy dinner parties, the room will likely have richly colored walls and a modern or elegant feel, while a dining room for traditional family dinners will have warmer colors and more of a simple feel. Design your dining room based on the mood you want to create at dinner.

Country Dining Room

Country dining rooms appeal to those who want to serve traditional family dinners and host holiday gatherings. The table in a country dining room should be made from a distressed wood or a lighter color of wood such as maple or oak surrounded by spindle-backed chairs or benches. Keep the walls light, with ivory or a pastel shade and accent them with a homemade wreaths and other craft items or a simple border on the wall. For lighting, stick with a simple chandelier or choose one with floral or leaf accents. A hutch or buffet will provide you with a place to store your dishes and display antique items, as well as hold extra food during a family dinner.

Elegant Dining Room

An elegant dining room invokes the feeling of wealth and opulence. Paint the walls a deep gold, deep red or other rich shade. Include a dining room table in a dark wood such as cherry or mahogany with ornate designs carved into it and surround it with ornately carved chairs with cushions in a gold-accented pattern or deep color. Hang a fancy chandelier from the middle of the table and provide low lighting options with wall sconces. Decorate the table with fine linens and expensive china. Cover the floor with an Oriental rug with gold fringe or tassels. Frame pictures and mirrors with ornate gold frames.

Modern Dining Room

A modern dining room offers simple furniture and minimal decoration. Stick with a neutral color for the walls, such as a white, gray or tan and keep decorations in neutral or metallic shades as well, with a pop of color from a vase of flowers, a painting on the wall or patterned dishes. Choose a table with sleek lines, sharp edges and simple chairs with straight lines. Instead of a traditional chandelier, choose a light fixture with a simplistic feel, such as lighted orbs hanging from the ceiling, or a more artistic feel.

Eclectic Dining Room

Eclectic dining rooms contain a mix of colors, woods and patterns. Paint the wall a vibrant color, such a turquoise or bright orange, and decorate the walls with pictures or artwork in different frames or unique shapes. Surround a simple table with cushioned chairs that contain patterned fabrics or unique patterns and shapes cut out from the chairs. Choose a busy chandelier or other unique light fixture to hang above the table and provide additional visual interest in the room. Mix and match colors and patterns in the dishes on the table.
