Choosing the right
Neutrals
In color theory, the neutrals include black, white and gray, and they are not considered colors. In the case of interior design, a neutral is a noncommittal color that falls in a vague category like gray, blue-gray or beige. These neutrals match just about everything. You can go one of two ways when trying to find an appropriate neutral that is cool tinted, or warm tinted. If you chose a blue-gray or flat gray wall paint, you'll probably want to stick to cool colored accessories, such as blues, purples and greens. You may also choose a brown/warm tinted neutral like beige. In this case, warm colored accessories -- even dark, earthy browns -- are appropriate.
Purples
This royal color makes a striking combination with black. Paint your walls a gray-purple, and look for a variety of purple and silver gray accessories to bring the look together. However, in the case of a small room, a dark purple paired with black furniture may become too claustrophobic. Proceed with caution, and only use this color in a room with a lot of natural daylight.
Cream
This minimalistic, utilitarian combination makes a sophisticated statement. For a classy look, pair your black furniture and cream colored walls with a cream bedspread and some original framed pen and ink drawings.
Sage
This understated color is so flexible in its applications, it's almost a neutral. Paint your walls sage green, pull up your carpet to reveal the hardwood floors beneath and decorate your room with little flourishes like a vase of gray curling twigs, a cozy little lamp with a light gray shade and a large mirror with a frame painted in distressed gray.
