Decorating a vintage style bedroom with old furniture is a lovely way to recycle cherished family furniture pieces or to offer a new home to old headboards and dressers you can find at your local thrift or antique stores. Mismatched pieces create an eclectic and comfortable bedroom, and you can tie them together with fabrics or by refinishing the separate furniture items with the same stain or paint colors.
Instructions
1. Leave your bedroom furniture mismatched or sand the old wooden pieces and apply a coat of stain or primer for a uniform look. Let the finish dry, and then apply another coat of stain or paint. Finish the stained furniture with a coat of polyurethane for sheen and durability. If you leave the furniture mismatched, polish the old wood with lemon oil to help bring back its luster.
2. Arrange the largest furniture pieces first in the bedroom. The bed and the dresser or armoire are anchors and should be placed away from each other to give the room balance. Side tables for the bedside can be inexpensive round tables covered with fabric if your old furniture set does not include them. A seating area with an overstuffed wing chair or rocking chair can be another anchor in the room and should be placed separate from the other large items.
3. Decorate with vintage fabrics, if you can find them, or new material that's designed with a nod to the past. A soft chenille bedspread paired with floral fabric coverings for the side tables and delicate lace curtains for the windows accent your old furniture beautifully while creating a cozy vintage bedroom.
4. Accent your floors with handmade braided rugs in different shapes and sizes. Antique mirrors and old family photos in sepia tone or black and white complement the old bedroom furniture. Shadow boxes showcasing vintage jewelry and knickknacks or pressed flowers framed in antique style frames will also fit in with the old style of your bedroom.
