A zebra's eye-catching stripes make a graphic, bold decorating statement.
Decorating your bedroom and bathroom in a zebra theme is a fun, easy project. Because zebra print decor is very of-the-moment, you can easily find a large selection of items to outfit your rooms, from shower curtains to bedspreads to towels to rugs. Whether the look you're going for is natural and earthy or bursting with of pop-art brights, adding a zebra-themed room to to your home is a sure-fire way for a do-it-yourself decorator to achieve a professionally decorated look.
Instructions
1. Select your style. Because zebra print is found in nature, its pattern can be considered a classic. On the other hand, zebra's bold, highly contrasting black and white stripes are very graphic, which make it an excellent choice in a contemporary room. Whether you're after a look that is classic or contemporary, juvenile or sophisticated, zebra prints will work well if you use them appropriately. The first step is to decide what type of style statement you'd like make, then make sure all pieces you add to the room help achieve that statement.
2. Choose your color palette. Zebra's graphic black and white is the perfect combination to really make a bright color pop. The trick is to choose one main third color, such as hot pink, purple, orange, aqua or lime green, and feature it prominently with the zebra stripe. However, zebra print decor isn't available only in black and white. If you're after a more restful, natural, subdued palette, use zebra-print accessories in shades or brown and cream mixed with earthy greens, gold, tan or khaki.
3. Remove anything that doesn't fit with your chosen style or color scheme. For example, if your desired outcome is a fun and funky teen girl's room in a black and white zebra mixed with hot pink, then remove decorations such as pastel floral curtains, a rainbow-striped bedspread and teddy bear wallpaper. If the item doesn't help accomplish your style statement, remove it.
4. Paint the walls, if necessary, in keeping with your style objectives and color scheme. While painting is not necessary in all cases, it can make your zebra-themed rooms so much more successful. For example, if you're going for a serene safari look and your walls are currently a bright shade, painting them khaki or celery green will make a big impact. On the other hand, bright walls will go well in a teen's room and will provide a pop of color to zebra's black and white.
5. Add zebra touches to your room, whether this means a rug, bedspread and curtains or simply a few well-placed accessories, such as a zebra-print picture frame, throw pillow and wastebasket. Zebra bath towels and a zebra shower curtain are easily added to a bathroom and can be mixed with a bright solid-color bath rug and matching hand towels. In the bedroom, a zebra rug, bedspread or upholstered chair make eye-catching focal points.
6. Keep the style and color palette consistent from bedroom to bathroom. Slight changes from room to room can be a welcome break, but don't take the differences too far. For example, if your main colors in the bedroom are zebra's black and white accented with purple, keep those three colors going in the bathroom, perhaps adding small doses of a second accent color. Keep the two rooms mostly consistent, especially if they are adjacent to one another.
