Removing A Bathroom Bulkhead

Remodeling often means removing bulkheads.

Bulkheads are sections of cabinets often used in kitchens and bathrooms. Generally, they appear to be suspended from the ceiling, although they are sometimes connected to both a wall and the ceiling. Removing bulkheads can give your bathroom a more open appearance, making the room look larger. You can remove a bathroom bulkhead fairly easily with the right tools.

Instructions

1. Empty the contents of the bulkhead. Clear out anything under the bulkhead. Cover anything under the bulkhead that can't be removed, such as a toilet, with old sheets and drop cloths.

2. Open the bulkhead doors and carefully inspect the back of the bulkhead and also the top inside of the bulkhead for nails or screws. Use a screwdriver to remove screws or the back end of the hammer to remove nails.

3. Pull downwards on the bulkhead. In some cases the bulkhead will pull free from the wall or ceiling. If it does not, proceed to Step 4.

4. Slide the tip of a sharp utility knife between the top of the bulkhead and the plaster ceiling where the two meet. Slowly move the blade tip along this seam. You may need to replace the blade periodically to keep it sharp. If the bulkhead is also flush against a wall, run the blade between the wall and bulkhead as well.

5. Pull down on the bulkhead until it comes free. You may need to use a pry bar to fully remove the bulkhead. Do so carefully as to avoid damaging the surrounding wall structure.
