French Country Bedroom Ideas

One of the most popular design styles today is the French country style. This style exemplifies comfort, ease, and a casual, refined elegance. While not overly prim and formal, it is also not too eclectic with confusing styles. French country style is particularly effective when designing a bedroom because it is simple, while retaining an elegant feel.

Texture, Color, Accents and Curtains

When designing a French country bedroom, choose vibrant colors like sunny yellows, clear blues, soft greens and whites that are creamy and serene. These all make good choices for wall colors.

Add texture to your French country bedroom by using furniture that has chipped paint. Even rusted iron pieces are suitable. Heavy cotton fabrics and rustic pine furniture add depth and a feeling of age. Use lacy, airy, white window coverings to provide a counterpoint to the heavy furniture. Use fresh flowers in vases for a touch of nature. In addition, toile and floral fabrics are good choices for bedding in the bedroom, along with wallpaper and curtains. Curtains and drapes should reach the floor and fall softly, often with lace curtains featured underneath heavier floral drapes. Include elegant tie-backs and ornate swags to finish the French country effect.

Accessories, Flooring and Lighting

French country can be described as a kind of light rustic style, using accessories that feature chipped paint finishes, and a worn, distressed look and feel. Use throw pillows in luxurious fabrics like brocade and silk for a touch of elegance. Throws can be tossed over the backs of chairs and draped over the end of the bed to add a sense of luxury. A soft, plush rug can be laid over whitewashed wood floors for a comfortable touch. Local antique stores and flea markets are great resources for finding old, worn-looking accessories like lamps, candlesticks and vases.

Lighting in the French country bedroom should be ornate. Use Tiffany-style lamps for a beautiful bedroom accent. Lampshades can also be made to match wallpaper or bedding in the bedroom. This looks particularly elegant when using toile fabric.

Furniture

Choose furniture for your bedroom that feels grounded and solid. Pick either pieces that are wood-stained or painted in greens, blues, whites or yellows. These colors help to coordinate the room and inject a French country feel. Remember to keep the pieces rustic, yet elegant. Substantial pieces along with lighter, more delicate pieces provide a good visual balance in the bedroom. The overall design effect of French country should incorporate a feeling of shabby chic.
