Rules For The Bathroom In The Workplace

Practice good workplace restroom etiquette.

Your job may be in a workplace where there are only a few bathrooms for many people or where the bathrooms are unisex. You can ensure that you maintain good bathroom etiquette and stay in the good graces of your co-workers by following a few simple workplace bathroom rules.

Knock Before You Enter

Not every bathroom door or stall latches very well, and you can walk in on a co-worker if you are not careful. Knock first to prevent embarrassing yourself and your co-worker.

Flush Completely

Flush the toilet completely and check it to make sure that everything gets flushed down. Wait for the water to stop moving and become clear. Flush the toilet again if any debris remains.

No Smoking

There is a "No Smoking" sign in the bathroom for a reason. While you may not like your workplace's No Smoking policy, smoking in the bathroom is not a substitute for smoking outside. It makes the air in the bathroom difficult to breathe and can set off a smoke detector.

No Cell Phones

Leave the cell phone in your office to prevent an expensive, watery accident and irate co-workers who do not want to hear your conversation. Cell phones do dry out if you can retrieve them from the toilet bowl, but it is better to prevent the accident instead of having to react to it.

Do Not Gossip

Talking in the workplace bathroom takes up time and space while others are waiting to use the restroom. Talking about co-workers can also get you into trouble if they or someone else overhears you.

Finish Quickly

Workplace bathrooms can get crowded quickly, especially after meetings and lunchtime. Finish your turn quickly so others do not have to wait.

Wash Your Hands

Wash your hands with soap once you have finished using the workplace facilities. You share a workplace and common objects with co-workers. Prevent the spread of bacteria by keeping your hands clean.

Toilet Lid Down

Put the toilet lid down when you are done after using a unisex workplace bathroom.

Clean up Spills

Take the time to clean up your own spills. Do not make the next person have to clean the toilet seat or floor for you.
